UK High Commissioner Assures Nigerians of Safety Amid Anti-Immigration Riots

Following a wave of anti-immigration riots in the United Kingdom, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has provided assurances to Nigerians residing in the UK about their safety and the commitment of UK authorities to maintaining order.

Montgomery’s reassurance came during a meeting on Wednesday with Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in Abuja. The High Commissioner revealed that twelve British towns have been impacted by the riots, which erupted in response to an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign. This campaign incited outrage after a stabbing attack in Southport, northern England, tragically claimed the lives of three schoolgirls, aged between six and nine.

Social media videos show large groups attempting to hijack cars driven by suspected immigrants, and attacking a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham.

Montgomery reported that over 400 individuals have been arrested in connection with the disturbances. In response, 60 special courts have been established, involving both UK police and legal operatives, to address the situation swiftly and effectively.

“The UK is a multicultural society that values diversity and remains open to qualified individuals seeking to live, study, and work,” Montgomery stated, emphasizing the UK’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged Montgomery’s reassurances, noting that no reports of harmed Nigerians had been received. She expressed gratitude for the cooperation of UK authorities and reminded Nigerians to heed travel advisories and stay safe amid the unrest.

Among the cities affected by the protests are Liverpool, Bristol, and Manchester, all of which host significant populations of foreign students.

The UK authorities continue to work diligently to restore calm and normalcy to the affected communities.
