The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a stern warning to vehicle tyre dealers, urging them to cease the sale of substandard tyres in a bid to promote road safety. The call was made during a Tyre Stakeholders’ Forum held at the Apo Mechanic Village on Thursday. The event, themed “Tyre Awareness – A National Imperative,” was organized to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining high-quality standards in the tyre industry.
Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, Director-General of SON, emphasized the need for dealers to ensure that only tyres of the highest quality are sold to consumers. “As a retailer, you have to select the type of tyres you are going to sell to consumers. Enough of substandard tyres,” he stated during his address at the forum. Dr. Okeke was represented by Dr. Marilyn Waziri, Director of SON’s North Regional Zone.
The forum highlighted the significant dangers posed by substandard tyres, which can lead to accidents and fatalities on the roads. Dr. Okeke also stressed that the issue takes on greater importance in light of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which is expected to increase trade and movement across the continent, making road safety more crucial than ever.
SON has vowed to continue its efforts to eliminate the circulation of substandard tyres and urged both dealers and consumers to be vigilant in ensuring the safety of vehicles on Nigerian roads.
