Manchester United moved a step closer to securing a return to the UEFA Champions League after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday.
Casemiro gave United an early advantage, while Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead before half-time. A late strike from Mathias Jensen ensured a tense finish, but the hosts held on to claim all three points.
The win cements United’s grip on third place in the Premier League, leaving them 11 points clear of sixth-placed Brighton. With the top five guaranteed Champions League qualification, United now need just two points from their remaining four matches to confirm their place in Europe’s elite competition for the first time since the 2023–24 season.
Interim manager Michael Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim in January, continues to strengthen his case for the permanent role. Guiding the club back into the Champions League would significantly boost his chances as co-owner Jim Ratcliffe weighs his options.
United will next host fierce rivals Liverpool, who sit just three points behind in fourth, in a decisive clash that could determine the final standings.
The home side started brightly, with Kobbie Mainoo carving open Brentford’s defence early on, though Amad Diallo squandered the opportunity. United’s dominance paid off in the 11th minute when Casemiro headed home from a well-worked set-piece delivered by Bruno Fernandes.
Casemiro, now with four goals in his last six matches, celebrated passionately as fans urged him to extend his stay beyond this season.
Brentford threatened sporadically, with Igor Thiago and Michael Kayode going close, but United doubled their lead just before the break. A determined effort from Diallo sparked the move, allowing Fernandes to set up Sesko, who finished emphatically.
Fernandes’ assist marked his 19th of the season, leaving him just one short of the Premier League record jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Brentford mounted late pressure, and Jensen’s stunning 20-yard strike in the 87th minute set up a nervy finale. However, United goalkeeper Senne Lammens produced key saves, including a stoppage-time effort from Mikkel Damsgaard, to preserve the win.
With momentum building at a crucial stage of the season, United are now firmly on course to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite.
