Manchester City defender John Stones has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing an end to a 10-year spell filled with domestic and European success.
The 31-year-old England international joined City from Everton in 2016 for £47.5 million, becoming Pep Guardiola’s second signing. Since then, he has made 293 appearances and scored 19 goals, establishing himself as a key figure in one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.
In an emotional statement on social media, Stones said he had “lived all my dreams out,” describing his time at the Etihad Stadium as a transformative journey both personally and professionally.
“It has been my home for the past 10 years and it will be my home for the rest of my life,” he said. “It’s been a rollercoaster in many ways. I came as a kid and I’m now leaving as a man.”
During his time at City, Stones won six Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, and multiple domestic trophies, with more silverware still possible this season as the club competes for a domestic treble.
City have already secured the League Cup and remain in contention for the Premier League title in a tight race with Arsenal. They are also set to face Chelsea in next month’s FA Cup final.
Stones paid tribute to manager Pep Guardiola, crediting him as a major influence on his success.
“I don’t think it would have been anywhere near as successful if it wasn’t for him,” he said. “I’m so grateful I’ve been able to spend so long with him, win everything with him, and share incredible moments.”
Guardiola’s side have praised Stones’ contribution, describing him as a key figure in the club’s most successful era.
Injuries have limited the defender to just 16 appearances across all competitions this season, but he remains expected to feature in England’s plans for the upcoming World Cup.
Stones is the latest long-serving City player to announce an exit, following club captain Bernardo Silva. Manchester City have confirmed plans to give him a formal farewell at the end of the campaign in recognition of his achievements.
