Inter Milan capped off a brilliant campaign on Wednesday night after beating Lazio 2-0 in the Italian Cup final at the Stadio Olimpico.

The victory handed Inter their 10th Italian Cup title and completed a domestic double alongside their 21st Serie A championship.

An own goal from Adam Marusic and a first-half strike from Lautaro Martinez secured a comfortable win for Cristian Chivu’s side in Rome.

Inter took control early in the match and never looked troubled by a struggling Lazio team. The opening goal arrived in the 14th minute when Marcus Thuram’s header from Federico Dimarco’s corner took a deflection off Marusic and found the net.

Lazio failed to respond with any real threat as Inter continued to dominate possession and chances.

The match was effectively over in the 35th minute after Lazio defender Nuno Tavares lost the ball near his own penalty area. Denzel Dumfries quickly intercepted and squared the ball to Martinez, who tapped home with ease.

The Argentine striker scored his 22nd goal in all competitions this season despite struggling with injuries during the campaign.

Inter coach Cristian Chivu praised his players after the final whistle and said the team fully deserved the trophies they won this season.

“We deserved the trophies after a good season,” Chivu told Mediaset.

“Winning the league and cup is never something you can take for granted. We’re very happy.”

Lazio’s disappointing season ended on another sour note. The club’s supporters have spent months protesting against owner Claudio Lotito, and frustration again spilled over during the final.

Fans loudly criticised the Lazio hierarchy while watching their team struggle throughout the contest.

Coach Maurizio Sarri admitted his side was second best on the night.

“Tonight we just came up against a better team than us,” Sarri said.

The second half lacked intensity as Inter comfortably protected their lead. Lazio rarely threatened Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez, while Luis Henrique missed a late opportunity to make the scoreline even bigger for Inter.

Boulaye Dia summed up Lazio’s difficult evening when he stumbled during a promising chance and sent his effort harmlessly against the goalkeeper.

Inter calmly saw out the remaining minutes before celebrating another major trophy in what has been a memorable season for the Italian giants.
