Donald Trump is heading to China this week for crucial talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid growing political and economic pressure at home, with analysts suggesting Washington now needs Beijing’s cooperation more than before.

The May 14–15 meetings will mark the first engagement between both leaders since they agreed in October to pause an intense trade war that saw both countries impose steep tariffs on each other’s goods.

Trump had previously argued that aggressive trade tariffs would force China to make major economic concessions. However, analysts say legal setbacks against his tariff policies and the ongoing conflict involving Iran have weakened the United States’ negotiating position ahead of the Beijing talks.

According to political analysts, expectations for major breakthroughs during the summit remain modest, with discussions likely to focus on limited trade agreements involving agricultural products, beef exports, and aircraft deals linked to Boeing.

Analysts also believe Trump is seeking China’s cooperation in resolving tensions linked to the Iran conflict, which has negatively affected his approval ratings ahead of the November midterm elections.

Alejandro Reyes, a specialist in Chinese foreign policy, said Trump appears to need a foreign policy success to project global stability and strengthen his political standing.

Since the suspension of triple-digit tariffs last year, China has reportedly strengthened its economic leverage against Washington while avoiding direct escalation.

Meanwhile, Trump has faced mounting domestic challenges, including court rulings against some of his tariff measures and political fallout from the Iran war.

The summit in Beijing is expected to include a formal meeting at the Great Hall of the People, visits to the Temple of Heaven, a state banquet, and private discussions between both leaders.

Despite the ceremonial significance of the visit, officials familiar with preparations say economic outcomes may be limited to a few trade agreements and mechanisms aimed at managing future disputes.

It also remains unclear whether both countries will agree to extend the existing trade truce.

Trump will be accompanied by several American business leaders, including Elon Musk and Tim Cook, although the business delegation is reportedly smaller than during his 2017 visit to Beijing.

Beyond trade, Trump said discussions with Xi would also cover US arms sales to Taiwan and the case of jailed Hong Kong media businessman Jimmy Lai.

Families of two Americans imprisoned in China for more than a decade have also urged Trump to seek their release during the meetings.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Trump said he respected Xi and hoped the Chinese leader respected him in return, adding that the United States was now performing strongly in its economic relationship with China.
