The Aviation Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria (AGHAN) has suspended its planned industrial action over a disputed N9bn debt following intervention by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The strike, which was initially scheduled to begin on Thursday, was halted after the regulator invited the association’s leadership to a stakeholders’ meeting fixed for May 12 at the NCAA annex office at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
In a joint statement signed by its Chairman, Olaniyi Adigun, and Vice-Chairman, Ahmed Bashir, AGHAN said the decision to suspend the strike was taken in the interest of dialogue and stability within the aviation sector.
The association noted that the NCAA’s intervention and invitation to formal talks signalled a willingness to address the concerns raised by its members regarding the outstanding debt.
AGHAN also confirmed receipt of a communication from the Airline Operators of Nigeria relating to the dispute, describing it as a positive development toward resolving the crisis.
The group said it would participate in the scheduled meeting, stressing its commitment to structured engagement with stakeholders.
According to the statement, “as an association, we will attend the NCAA’s meeting as scheduled,” adding that consultations were ongoing with members and stakeholders to agree on a unified position ahead of discussions.
It further explained that all planned industrial actions remain suspended pending the outcome of negotiations and the establishment of a clear resolution framework.
“Any previously contemplated industry actions remain on hold pending the outcome of ongoing engagements,” the association said.
AGHAN reaffirmed its commitment to the stability and safety of Nigeria’s aviation industry, stressing that disputes can be resolved through dialogue and due process.
The association also urged calm among stakeholders and the travelling public as discussions continue, expressing optimism that a lasting resolution will be reached.
“We therefore urge all parties and the general public to remain calm as structured engagements continue between stakeholders,” it added.
