The Lagos State Government has announced the full operational guidelines for the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which is scheduled to resume on April 25.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the exercise will henceforth take place on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30am and 8:30am, during which there will be restricted movement across the state to allow residents to clean their surroundings.

According to him, residents are expected to use the period to clean their homes, streets, drainage systems, and adjoining environments in line with the state’s renewed environmental management drive.

The sanitation exercise had earlier been symbolically launched along the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor on March 14, ahead of its full statewide implementation.

Its reintroduction comes nearly a decade after it was suspended in November 2016 following a court ruling that restricted movement during sanitation hours.

Wahab warned that enforcement measures will be strictly applied, noting that residents who fail to comply with the guidelines will face sanctions under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

Enforcement, he said, will be carried out by a joint team comprising officials from the Ministry of Environment, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Kick Against Indiscipline, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and local government sanitation officers.

The teams are expected to conduct inspections during and after the sanitation window to ensure compliance across the state.

To support the exercise, LAWMA will deploy intervention trucks to evacuate bagged waste generated during the cleanup period, ensuring proper disposal and environmental hygiene.

Wahab also disclosed that the state government will introduce incentives to encourage participation, including awards for the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and streets across Lagos.

He urged residents to actively support the initiative, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a cleaner environment.

“We urge all residents to take ownership of this exercise and join hands with the government in building a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Lagos,” he said.

The state government maintains that the revived sanitation programme is part of broader efforts to improve environmental health, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable urban living across Lagos.
