Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ex-Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Kwankwaso, who also served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, registered with the party and received his membership card on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano.

Several prominent political figures attended the event, including the National Chairman of the ADC and former Senate President, David Mark. Also present were former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Senator Dino Melaye, and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.

Kwankwaso had earlier announced his resignation from the NNPP on Sunday, citing the need for a strategic political realignment.

In a statement issued to the public, he confirmed that his exit from the party took immediate effect.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso stated.

The former governor described the decision as difficult, noting his long-standing relationship with the party and its members.

“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.

Kwankwaso also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the NNPP, including the party’s National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as other organs of the party for their support during his time in the party.

He further thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and his supporters nationwide for their loyalty and dedication.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.

Political analysts say the move could reshape alliances ahead of future elections, especially with several influential figures now aligning within the ADC.
