Manchester United bolstered their UEFA Champions League aspirations with a 3–1 home victory over top-four rivals Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Casemiro opened the scoring early in the second half following a well-taken corner from Bruno Fernandes. Ross Barkley levelled for Villa in his first Premier League start in 14 months, but late strikes from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko sealed the win for United.
The victory marked the seventh in nine games for interim manager Michael Carrick, who has stabilised the club following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Sitting third in the Premier League, United are now three points clear of fourth-placed Villa in the race for Champions League qualification.
United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe praised Carrick’s “excellent” work this week but has not confirmed him as permanent manager. Nevertheless, the interim boss continues to strengthen his case, having steadied the squad and secured six consecutive home victories—a feat only previously bettered at the start of a Premier League managerial reign by Sven-Göran Eriksson, Carlo Ancelotti, and Manuel Pellegrini.
After a slow first half, the breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when Casemiro timed his run perfectly to head home Fernandes’ near-post delivery, scoring his first league goal of the season. United supporters serenaded the Brazilian midfielder with chants of “one more year,” amid reports of his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.
Villa briefly equalised in the 64th minute when Barkley unleashed a superb strike past Senne Lammens after a United defensive lapse. However, Cunha restored the lead late, and Sesko’s finish confirmed the 3–1 triumph.
Meanwhile, Villa’s recent poor form continues. Unai Emery’s side have lost three consecutive league matches and collected only 12 points from their last 12 games, leaving their Champions League hopes in jeopardy.
