The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that the official opening of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Bakassi, Cross Rivers State, was disrupted by unidentified individuals.

The ceremony, which was set to formally inaugurate the party’s new office in Bakassi Local Government Area, drew supporters and members of the coalition. However, the event was abruptly halted when some persons stormed the venue, pulled down canopies, scattered chairs, and damaged parts of the sound system. The disruption caused panic among attendees and forced the organisers to suspend proceedings.

Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Eitokpah, said security personnel, including tactical response teams, were immediately deployed to restore order and prevent further incidents. He confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the disturbance.

“The presence of security operatives helped bring the situation under control. Relevant agencies will continue to monitor the area, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Eitokpah stated.

The incident occurs ahead of ADC’s national convention scheduled for April 14, 2026. The party also announced that ward congresses will commence on April 7, followed by local government and state congresses in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

According to a joint statement by ADC National Organising Secretary, Prince Chinwdu Idigo, and National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party urged members nationwide to participate in the process while adhering to the constitution, guidelines, and democratic principles of the organisation.

The ADC stressed that the congresses and national convention are part of its constitutional mandate to renew leadership structures at all levels, from polling units and wards through local government and state levels, culminating in the national convention.
