The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the registration of two new political parties in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan made the disclosure on Thursday during the commission’s first regular consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja. The newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Amupitan explained that the registration process followed a rigorous assessment after INEC received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking recognition as political parties. Fourteen associations passed the initial pre-qualification stage, and eight subsequently uploaded their documents to the commission’s dedicated portal.

“The eight associations were the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA), Abundance Social Party (ASP), African Alliance Party (AAP), Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Green Future Party (GFP), National Democratic Party (NDP), and the Peoples Freedom Party (PFP),” Amupitan stated.

Following final assessment and verification for compliance with the constitution and the Electoral Act, only the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) met all legal requirements and was registered by INEC.

The second party, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), was registered in compliance with a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, Kogi State, in suit No. FHC/LKJ/CS/49/2025, ordering INEC to grant the party official recognition.

Amupitan confirmed that certificates of registration for the two new political parties will be handed over in due course, marking their official entry into Nigeria’s political landscape.
