A former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has said that the outcome of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries will determine whether Peter Obi can defeat former Vice President Atiku Abubakar within the party.
Ahmad stated that while Obi enjoys strong backing among young voters, Atiku retains the advantage of long-established political structures and party machinery.
Sharing his view in a post on X, Ahmad wrote: “The likelihood of Peter Obi prevailing over Atiku Abubakar in the ADC primaries largely hinges on the mode of the primaries.
“Obi commands significant support among young voters, while Atiku enjoys the backing of established structures and the party machinery.”
Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, recently defected to the ADC, a move that has reshaped the party’s internal political calculations ahead of the next general elections.
There are growing indications that Obi may seek the ADC’s presidential ticket, potentially setting up a high-stakes contest with Atiku, who is also widely believed to be eyeing the party’s nomination.
Political observers say the eventual mode of the ADC primaries—whether through direct or indirect voting—could significantly influence the outcome of the contest.
