Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Friday dismissed claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, that the state’s health system is “moribund,” describing the allegation as baseless and misleading.

Adeleke’s response was contained in an official statement issued from the Governor’s Office in Osogbo and signed by his spokesperson, Rasheed Olawale. The governor said the claim was a “disinformation attempt” that further exposed what he described as the opposition candidate’s disconnect from realities on the ground.

“It is like the opposition candidate is living in another world because Osun today, from 2024, is number one across the South West in the area of provision of primary health care. When the Ikire man was in government, Osun was nowhere within the 10 digits,” Adeleke said.

He noted that over 200 primary healthcare centres had been renovated under his administration, with another phase of renovation currently ongoing. Adeleke also accused the previous APC-led government, in which Oyebamiji served, of mismanaging a $20 million World Bank grant meant for the renovation of primary healthcare centres.

Oyebamiji had earlier, in his acceptance speech after emerging winner of the 2026 APC governorship primary, described Osun’s health system as moribund and pledged to revitalise it to reduce medical tourism, stressing that welfare, peace and progress would be central to the APC’s agenda.

Responding, Adeleke outlined several achievements of his administration in the health sector, including the upgrade of hospitals with modern medical equipment and facilities. According to the statement, these include the procurement of modern operating materials for wards and theatres; acquisition of digital medical devices such as sphygmomanometers, pulse oximeters, thermometers and CPAP machines; installation of genotype testing equipment, digital X-ray printers and other diagnostic tools; and the establishment of renal dialysis services through a Public–Private Partnership arrangement.

Other interventions listed include the provision of air conditioners for clinical and patient care areas, establishment of a new theatre pharmacy, procurement of a hospital mini-bus, and an ongoing project for a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On staff welfare, Adeleke said his administration had reversed what he described as years of neglect under the APC, restoring the dignity of medical personnel. He highlighted the approval and implementation of the Medical Residency Training Fund at the Osun State Teaching Hospital, new hazard and accoutrement allowances, implementation of the new minimum wage, tax waivers on call duty and shift allowances, replacement of doctors on a one-for-one basis, and renovation of doctors’ call rooms.

The governor also cited the regularisation of previously unconfirmed staff, promotion exercises for nurses and other health workers, improved allowances for contract staff and visiting consultants, wage improvements for casual workers, and settlement of outstanding debts to pharmaceutical suppliers.

Adeleke concluded that Oyebamiji should be “ashamed of the sordid records of a government under which he was a key player,” adding that Osun State has become a model in healthcare delivery, winning the primary healthcare challenge in both 2024 and 2025.
