President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles following their emphatic 4-1 victory over Gabon in Thursday’s FIFA World Cup qualifying Africa Playoff match, praising the team’s display of Nigerian resilience, adaptability, and determination.
The President commended the players for their courage, balance, and precision, noting that football remains one of Nigeria’s most powerful symbols of unity and national pride.
“This victory adds fresh momentum to our national spirit and strengthens our collective resolve to secure a place at the World Cup,” Tinubu said. He lauded the players, coaching staff, and technical and administrative teams for their dedication, adding that their commitment has brought the national team this well-deserved success.
“The result reflects the deep pool of talent that Nigeria continues to produce and the determination of the Super Eagles to reclaim their place among Africa’s most respected teams,” the President added. He also praised millions of Nigerians supporting the team at home and abroad, emphasizing that their energy is a driving force during decisive moments in international competitions.
Addressing the squad directly, Tinubu urged the players to build on the victory and maintain focus on the remaining qualifiers. “Every match is an opportunity to demonstrate discipline and character, and to prove that Nigeria’s ambition is within reach. This is the true Nigerian spirit of resilience against all odds. Do not stop until you secure qualification. Super Eagles, keep soaring. The nation stands with you!”
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential flagbearer, also praised the Super Eagles via his verified X account. He described the team’s performance as a reminder that “when we invest in talent and support our institutions, Nigeria can compete and win on any global stage.” Obi congratulated the players, coaching staff, and all Nigerians who continue to believe in a stronger and more united nation.
On the pitch at Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan, Rabat, Nigeria moved closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Gabon 4–1 in extra time. Akor Adams broke the deadlock in the 78th minute following an error from Gabon’s Aaron Appindangoye. Gabon equalized in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina’s deflected shot, sending the match into extra time.
Extra time shifted decisively in Nigeria’s favor. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead in the 98th minute, followed by two quick goals from Victor Osimhen, securing Nigeria’s passage to Sunday’s final against DR Congo. The match also showcased 20-year-old defender Benjamin Frederick, who effectively contained Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and provided stability at the back.
Coach Eric Chelle described the performance as “shaped by resilience,” noting that the team “responded with clarity when the moment demanded it.” Osimhen’s double brought him closer to Rashidi Yekini’s all-time scoring record, a milestone he described as “a chase built on consistency.”
Nigeria now face DR Congo in the playoff decider, carrying the confidence of a team determined to avoid a second consecutive World Cup absence.
