PDP BoT Insists National Convention in Ibadan Must Hold Despite Internal Challenges

Party leaders vow to proceed with Saturday’s convention, citing Supreme Court guidance and internal consensus.

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed that the party’s national convention scheduled for Saturday in Ibadan must go ahead as planned, despite ongoing internal disputes and legal challenges.

BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, made the statement on Thursday while receiving the report of the party’s Reconciliation Committee in Abuja. The committee, chaired by Hassan Adamu, was inaugurated on November 5 to address issues that would enable a free and successful national convention.

In an interview with journalists, Wabara emphasized that all organs of the party—including the Governor’s Forum, the National Working Committee (NWC), and the BoT—had agreed to proceed with the convention, despite suggestions by some individuals to constitute a caretaker committee.

“You know the Governor’s Forum, the National Working Committee, and the BoT. In our last meeting, our communique made mention of us going for the convention. But, if for any reason, the Court of Law decides otherwise, because we are relying on the judgement of the Supreme Court, we will obey the law,” Wabara said.

He denied that the party was in crisis, describing the challenges as “self-inflicted problems” driven by “elective interests,” with some politicians allegedly looking ahead to 2031. Wabara reiterated that the BoT is fully committed to ensuring the survival and continuity of the PDP.

“I am not thinking of contesting for anything. Naturally, whatever decisions the board takes under my watch will be something to really keep the party alive,” he added.

Committee Chairman Adamu described the task of reconciling party factions as “very difficult” but thanked the BoT for the opportunity. “We have gone round; we have spoken to various segments of our party, our leaders, the Governors’ Forum and others; we have now come up with our recommendations for a hitch-free convention,” he said.

The Committee Secretary, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, outlined key stakeholders consulted during the week-long assignment, including the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the NWC led by Umar Damagum, the PDP Governors’ Forum, and suspended party officials such as National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. The committee also met with former Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, to gather his input.

Oghiadomhe explained that the recommendations were designed to provide a roadmap for sustainable and progressive party administration, balancing the pros and cons of the current situation.
