Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes the pain of last season’s Champions League exit will be the spark his team needs to go all the way this year.
Speaking ahead of their Group Stage opener against Athletic Bilbao on Tuesday, Arteta reflected on the lessons learned from the Gunners’ semi-final loss to eventual winners PSG in the 2024/25 season.
“It’s painful… but you take a lot of learnings from it,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference at the San Mamés Stadium.
“We’re Good Enough to Compete” – Arteta
Despite falling short last season, Arteta insists his side proved they belong among Europe’s elite.
“We are good enough, we can compete against any opposition on the day,” he said.
“But the margins are so small — the ball has to go in, decisions have to go your way, and you need your full squad available.”
Arsenal have not won a major European title, with their closest attempt coming in 2006, when they lost to Barcelona in the final. Their last major trophy was the FA Cup in 2020.
Injury Setbacks for Gunners
The Gunners will be without several key players for the clash with Bilbao. Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Saliba, Martin Odegaard, and Ben White are all unavailable, dealing a significant blow to squad depth.
However, Arteta remains confident in the strength and mentality of his group.
Raya Reflects on His Journey to Number One
Goalkeeper David Raya, who replaced Aaron Ramsdale in 2023 amid criticism, has now made 100 appearances for Arsenal, keeping 42 clean sheets in the process.
“There was a lot of noise when I joined,” Raya said.
“But I had to focus on myself. Off the pitch, I just try to be deaf, basically.”
The Spanish keeper echoed his manager’s confidence:
“We believe we can win. We’re Arsenal — and we play to win.”
Eyes on the Trophy
Both Arteta and Raya agree: Arsenal’s Champions League campaign is fueled by a renewed sense of belief and experience.
“It’s a long journey,” said Raya, “but we’re ready.”
The Gunners kick off their European campaign on Tuesday night as Athletic Bilbao return to Champions League football after 11 years.
