INEC Extends Voter Registration in Anambra by Three Days Amid High Turnout

A final breakdown of voter demographics — including age, gender, occupation, and disability status — will be published in due course.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a three-day extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Anambra State.

Originally scheduled to end on July 17, the registration will now conclude on Sunday, July 20, 2025.

According to Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the decision was reached during the commission’s weekly meeting in Abuja in response to appeals from citizens and stakeholders.

“The commission is pleased with the turnout of registrants in Anambra state and the peaceful conduct of the CVR in all the 326 registration centres,” Olumekun said in a press release issued Thursday in Awka.

INEC revealed that within nine days of the exercise, 96,085 new potential voters had registered, averaging over 10,600 registrations per day.

Additionally, INEC recorded:

  • 12,595 requests for voter registration transfers
  • 7,061 applications for PVC updates or replacements due to damage or loss

The commission noted that women and youths are leading participation in the exercise.

“Of the 96,085 new registrants, 56,017 (58%) are female, while 50,429 (52.48%) are youths aged 18–34,” Olumekun disclosed.

Following the conclusion of the registration, the preliminary voters register will be displayed for claims and objections, in line with the Electoral Act. INEC will also conduct a comprehensive biometric clean-up using its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

A final breakdown of voter demographics — including age, gender, occupation, and disability status — will be published in due course.

Olumekun also revealed that INEC has received five new letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applications to 134.

“Details of these applications, including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership, have been made available on the commission’s website and social media platforms for public scrutiny.”

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and timely dissemination of information ahead of the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election.
