Kwara’s Abdulbasit Abdulfatai and Cross River’s Hope Udoaka stole the spotlight at the 5th Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial National Table Tennis Championships, claiming the top titles in the Men’s and Women’s Singles respectively.
The tournament, hosted in Otan Ayegbaju, Osun State, saw fierce competition as defending champions crashed out in the quarterfinals, clearing the path for new victors.
Abdulfatai showcased sheer dominance in the Men’s Singles final, dispatching surprise finalist Matthew Fabunmi in straight sets (12-10, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7). In the Women’s Singles, Udoaka triumphed over veteran Halima Hussain of Oyo in a 4-1 contest (11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7).
In the U-15 division, Lagos’ Ifeoluwa Ajasa defeated Edo’s Deborah Faleye 3-1 to win the girls’ crown, while Marvelous Joseph of Kogi overcame Osun’s Umar Ayoola 3-1 in the boys’ final.
Tournament referee John Peter highlighted the uniqueness of the event, saying:
“The 5th edition was a blend of competition and entertainment, with performances by artists and strong volunteer support from university students. It added a new vibe to the tournament atmosphere.”
The closing ceremony was attended by Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, House Speaker Adewale Egbedun, and HRM Ọba Adesola Ojo Fadipe, reflecting the event’s growing prestige.
With N11.5 million in prize money and nationwide participation from over 20 states and major sports clubs, the tournament was both a celebration of talent and a ranking event under the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF)
