Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany says he’s keeping his players grounded ahead of their crucial Bundesliga clash against RB Leipzig on Saturday, a match that could seal a record 34th German league title for the Bavarian giants.
Bayern currently hold an eight-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen, with three games to play. A win in Leipzig would secure the title, while even matching Leverkusen’s result at Freiburg on Sunday would suffice.
“We want to win tomorrow and be champions. That’d be nice,” Kompany told reporters during Friday’s pre-match press conference.
“Tomorrow is a final for us. Hopefully we do it. But I’m not preparing any celebrations — I’m preparing for the game.”
Kompany stressed that RB Leipzig, who are pushing for a top-four finish, will be tough opposition.
“They have a lot of talent, good young players. They lost in Frankfurt last week, so I expect them to come out full of energy,” he added.
“Teams make radical decisions when they play against Bayern. We’ll get the best version of Leipzig.”
Bayern will be without their top scorer Harry Kane, who is suspended for the match. However, Kompany confirmed that the England captain may still travel with the team to support his teammates.
“Harry is one of our best players mentally. He knows his moment is coming. He’s exuding confidence,” Kompany said.
“Maybe some guys will come with us to Leipzig… Harry probably won’t pass up the opportunity.”
Kane has been in stellar form, contributing 36 goals and 12 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions this season. Despite missing the potential title-clincher, the striker remains a key figure in the dressing room.
