Nigerian music superstar Davido has stirred reactions following his comments about convicted internet fraudster Hushpuppi, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States.
In a recent podcast interview, Davido stated that while they were friends, he had no knowledge of Hushpuppi’s fraudulent activities. The 30 Billion Gang leader expressed sympathy for his jailed associate and voiced hope for his eventual release.
“Hushpuppi is coming out soon. He lived life. To me, it is not worth it to be locked up. But let me not make excuses for them [fraudsters],” Davido said.
He also highlighted the extreme poverty and hardship in Nigeria as one of the driving forces behind illegal activities, saying some people choose to “ball” for a few years over enduring lifelong suffering.
“In Nigeria, there is a kind of hardship you would face and you will be like, you know what? Let me ball for two years then I am good. People are like that. My prayers go out to him [Hushpuppi]. He was my friend. I just see him around, I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life,” he added.
Davido’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with some applauding his honesty and others questioning the morality of expressing support for a convicted cybercriminal.
