Manchester United’s domestic woes deepened as they suffered a 1-0 home loss to Wolves, leaving manager Ruben Amorim frustrated and brutally honest about his team’s shortcomings.
Pablo Sarabia’s second-half free-kick secured a fifth consecutive league victory for Wolves — their best top-flight run since 1970 — and highlighted United’s ongoing struggles under Amorim.
The Portuguese coach, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has only won six of his 22 Premier League matches in charge. Thursday’s dramatic 5-4 comeback against Lyon in the Europa League briefly masked their league decline, but Saturday’s defeat left United languishing in 14th place with a club-record 15 losses in a Premier League season.
Speaking after the match, Amorim didn’t hold back. “If we don’t score goals, nothing matters because in the end it is the result that counts,” he said. “We say to the fans the truth: that we lack a lot of things in our team, that we miss chances, that if we don’t score goals we are not going to win.”
United’s goal-scoring issues continued as Danish striker Rasmus Højlund extended his poor run to just one goal in his last 28 games. With Joshua Zirkzee ruled out for the season, Amorim confirmed he had no choice but to persist with the struggling forward.
“He needs to score one. Maybe that’s all a striker needs,” Amorim added, hopeful that a single goal could turn around Højlund’s confidence.
With a Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao on the horizon, Amorim’s focus is now on steadying the ship and salvaging what’s left of United’s turbulent season.
