Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that the club is still actively looking to bolster their squad before the summer transfer window closes, despite missing out on their top target, Martin Zubimendi. The Reds had attempted to sign the highly-rated Spain midfielder from Real Sociedad, but the player ultimately chose to stay with his current club.
Speaking about the transfer situation, Slot emphasized the strength of Liverpool’s current squad but acknowledged the challenges in finding players who can make a meaningful impact.
“I’ve said many times already that our squad is really strong and it’s not so easy to find players who can help us or even strengthen the squad,” Slot stated. “Zubimendi was one of them to be fair, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have. [Wataru] Endo did well in pre-season so we’re in a good place.”
Slot praised the efforts of Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, who has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure new signings. However, he conceded that the club had to respect Zubimendi’s decision not to join.
“In the background, Richard is trying to strengthen the squad as he can but, unfortunately, Zubimendi decided not to come,” Slot added. “He did every effort to bring him in but, if a player decides not to come, then it’s obvious he’s not coming.”
With the transfer window set to close at 23:00 BST on Friday, August 30, Liverpool remains the only Premier League club yet to make a major signing this summer. Slot’s comments suggest that while the club is content with its current squad, they are still exploring options to further enhance the team before the deadline.
