Liverpool are preparing to open formal talks with Andoni Iraola over becoming the club’s new head coach following the departure of Arne Slot.
The Reds parted ways with Slot on Saturday, bringing an end to his tenure just one year after he guided the club to the Premier League title.
Liverpool’s hierarchy are eager to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible. Iraola has emerged as the leading contender for the position.
According to BBC Sport, the 43-year-old Spaniard impressed during his time at Bournemouth. He led the Cherries to their highest-ever Premier League finish and secured European football for the club.
Bournemouth ended the season in sixth place and qualified for next season’s Europa League. The south coast side finished only three points behind Liverpool in the league standings.
Liverpool have assessed several candidates during their search. Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness and Lens boss Pierre Sage were among the names considered. However, Iraola is widely expected to receive an offer from the Merseyside club.
The Spanish coach confirmed in April that he would leave Bournemouth at the end of the season. His success in England has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, including Crystal Palace, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen.
Liverpool’s decision to move on from Slot was reportedly influenced by a desire to adopt a more aggressive and high-intensity style of play. Club officials believe Iraola’s tactical approach aligns closely with that vision.
A key factor in the process could be Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes. Hughes previously worked closely with Iraola during his time as Bournemouth’s technical director. Their existing relationship may help facilitate negotiations.
Despite qualifying for next season’s Champions League, Liverpool endured a difficult league campaign. The club finished with 60 points, their lowest total since the 2015-16 season. They also ended the campaign 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Iraola enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Athletic Bilbao and earned international recognition with Spain. After retiring, he began his coaching career with AEK Larnaca in Cyprus before managing Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano in Spain.
He joined Bournemouth in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most respected managers.
Liverpool are expected to accelerate discussions with Iraola in the coming days as they seek to appoint a new head coach before pre-season preparations begin.
