The Lagos State Government has expanded its welfare support programme for pensioners as inflation and rising living costs continue to place pressure on fixed-income earners.

The initiative is designed to provide relief packages to retired public servants and strengthen social protection systems across the state.

The programme, coordinated by the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), commenced in the Ikeja Division and is expected to be extended to Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe divisions in subsequent phases.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Lagos, the Director-General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, said the initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the contributions of retired workers and its commitment to ensuring dignity in retirement.

He noted that pensioners played a vital role in building the state’s public service and continue to remain important stakeholders in Lagos’ development structure.

“Our retirees helped lay the foundation for the public service we have today. This initiative is not only about distributing welfare items but also about appreciating their sacrifices and reassuring them that they remain valued members of the Lagos state family,” he said.

Obilana added that beyond immediate welfare support, LASPEC is implementing broader reforms aimed at improving pension administration, expanding healthcare access, and making services more accessible to retirees.

He further stated that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to the timely payment of pension entitlements and policies that enhance the welfare of senior citizens.

The ongoing programme is part of wider efforts by the state government to cushion the impact of economic challenges on vulnerable groups, particularly retirees living on fixed incomes.

A retired education officer, Grace Akinyemi, who attended the event, said the initiative would help many pensioners better cope with current economic realities.

She noted that rising inflation has significantly affected the purchasing power of many retirees, making such interventions both timely and necessary.

The Lagos State Government said the programme will continue across other divisions in the coming weeks as part of its broader social welfare agenda.
