The Federal Government has disbursed N11.8 billion to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff across Nigerian tertiary institutions under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF).
The initiative, driven by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, is designed to improve the welfare, career development, and financial stability of workers in higher institutions.
Launched in August 2025, the TISSF provides interest-free loans of up to N10 million to eligible staff across federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
According to data published by the ministry, beneficiaries of the scheme were drawn from 141 institutions, while a total of 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified so far.
The data further showed that staff members from federal universities accounted for 59 per cent of applicants, followed by polytechnics with 23 per cent, and colleges of education with 18 per cent.
The programme forms part of the broader Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, which aims to reposition the country’s education system through targeted interventions and innovation.
Officials said the fund operates as a zero per cent interest loan scheme, with eligibility requiring a minimum of five years to retirement.
In addition to the loan disbursement, the government has also distributed 240 e-tricycles across 12 institutions to support mobility and operational efficiency within campuses.
Other initiatives under the reform programme include the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training platform introduced to strengthen educators’ skills. Launched at the first National Teacher Summit in January 2026, the platform has recorded over 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules.
The platform offers audio and video lessons, case studies, and certification opportunities to support continuous professional development for teachers.
Additionally, the School Safety Portal, developed in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, has been deployed to enhance security management in schools. The portal currently contains data on more than 156,000 geolocated schools nationwide.
The Federal Government said the combined interventions reflect its commitment to strengthening the education sector through improved staff welfare, capacity building, and enhanced institutional safety.
