The Ilorin Emirate Political Advisory Council has endorsed Senator Saliu Mustapha as its preferred candidate for the 2027 Kwara State governorship race, while also declaring support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The endorsement was announced during a press conference in Ilorin, addressed by the council’s National Coordinator, Dr Yakub Oloriegbe, alongside Secretary Lt. Col. Abubakar Edun (retd).
Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production Services and Rural Development, has recently received increasing political backing from groups across the state.
Among his supporters is Corporate Kwara, a coalition of young entrepreneurs and SME leaders, which pledged ₦100 million to support his All Progressives Congress governorship nomination bid.
The council said its endorsement was based on Mustapha’s legislative record, leadership experience, and sustained engagement in public service and party administration.
“Senator Mustapha stands head and shoulders above his peers, having consistently demonstrated uncommon leadership, political dexterity, and a deep-rooted commitment to grassroots development,” Oloriegbe said.
He described Mustapha as a unifying figure capable of bridging political divides and fostering inclusive governance.
“Mustapha embodies the qualities required not just to win an election, but to govern with vision, fairness, and competence,” he added.
The council further praised the senator’s maturity, exposure, and ability to connect with diverse groups, describing his leadership style as inclusive and results-driven.
It also noted that Mustapha would ensure continuity of governance in Kwara State, particularly in building on the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
“Senator Mustapha offers the most seamless transition, bringing continuity, stability, and fresh energy to governance,” the council said.
However, the group clarified that its endorsement does not exclude other aspirants, urging political stakeholders to prioritise unity, stability, and development in the state.
On national politics, the council said its support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid was based on what it described as positive governance strides and increased federal attention to Kwara Central.
It added that the endorsements followed extensive consultations and careful evaluation of leadership capacity across all levels of government.
The development is expected to further shape early political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
