The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday condemned the defection of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as an “act of cowardice” that challenges the principles of multi-party democracy in Nigeria.
Through its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP National Working Committee reminded Fintiri that history and posterity serve as impartial judges of human actions.
The party criticised Fintiri for leaving a platform that supported his political journey across multiple election cycles over “minor inconveniences,” stating that the move reflects unrestrained cowardice rather than principled conduct.
“We are aware of the official announcement of the long-speculated defection of His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, from our party to the All Progressives Congress… By this announcement, the governor himself has confirmed what hitherto was a rumour,” the PDP said in a statement.
While acknowledging Fintiri’s legal right to defect, the PDP argued that the decision “is clearly against political principles and morality, a challenge to multi-party democracy and democratic consolidation.”
The party also urged its members in Adamawa State to accept the development with composure, noting that “the true test of a person is during times of inconvenience and contention.” It assured supporters that the “rebirth movement” of the PDP is ongoing and aimed at repositioning the party for future electoral success.
