Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerians to use the concurrent observance of Ramadan and the Christian Lenten season to strengthen national unity and show practical compassion to fellow citizens.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Shettima described the period as a unique opportunity for spiritual renewal and collective nation-building. He stressed that the holy month requires more than religious rituals, urging citizens to actively contribute to addressing the nation’s challenges.

“Let us not only feed the hungry, but uplift the weary; not only give charity, but extend kindness; not only pray for peace, but work for justice. This is the true essence of Ramadan,” he said.

The Vice President described Ramadan as “a journey of the soul and a time for deep reflection, for self-purification, and for embracing the true essence of Islam—peace, patience, sacrifice and service to humanity.”

He paid tribute to Nigeria’s religious leaders across faiths, describing them as the moral and spiritual compass of the nation. According to him, their guidance remains vital at a time when both major religious communities are engaged in solemn spiritual exercises.

Shettima also called for prayers for national stability and unity, urging citizens to reject forces that seek to divide the country.

“We must strengthen the bonds that unite us and reject the forces that seek to divide us,” he said.

The Vice President further requested prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asking that divine guidance grant him wisdom, strength and foresight to lead the nation effectively.
