Sevilla coach Matias Almeyda has been handed a seven-match ban following his red card last weekend during a 1-1 La Liga draw with Alaves.

The 52-year-old Argentine was sent off for protesting a decision and proceeded to march onto the pitch at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, remonstrating angrily with the referee for over a minute.

The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee outlined the breakdown of the suspension: two games for protesting, one game for failing to leave the pitch, three games for an “attitude of contempt” towards officials, and an additional game for unsporting conduct.

Sevilla currently sit 13th in La Liga, just two points above the relegation zone, with 14 matches remaining in the season. Almeyda will miss half of those fixtures due to the suspension, potentially complicating the club’s fight to stay clear of relegation.
