The Lagos State Government is set to officially launch the Omi Eko Project, a landmark clean energy and innovation-driven initiative aimed at transforming water transportation across the state.
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled to hold on Friday, October 17, at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo, and will be coordinated by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
According to LASWA, the Omi Eko Project marks a pivotal milestone in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a sustainable, technology-powered, and environmentally responsible transport system for Africa’s largest city.
“This initiative represents a pivotal milestone in the state’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, cutting-edge water transportation, and smart city innovation,” LASWA stated.
The high-profile launch is expected to attract dignitaries, government officials, development partners, and key stakeholders. The event will feature keynote addresses, a virtual presentation on the project, and a formal inauguration by Governor Sanwo-Olu.
Designed to redefine the future of water transportation in Lagos, the Omi Eko Project will deploy over 78 high-capacity electric ferries, alongside digital ticketing systems, intelligent terminals, and advanced safety technologies.
The initiative aims to reduce travel times, enhance passenger comfort, and ease traffic congestion on the roads while promoting clean energy adoption and environmental sustainability.
LASWA explained that the Five Cowries Terminal was chosen as the launch venue to highlight its importance within Lagos’s intermodal transport network and the broader Lagos Urban Mobility Plan, which integrates road, rail, and water systems for seamless citywide movement.
Beyond transforming public transport, the Omi Eko Project is expected to open new economic corridors along the state’s waterways, create jobs, and stimulate commercial activities, reinforcing Lagos’s status as a model for sustainable urban innovation in Africa.
