In a significant move aimed at improving the welfare of workers, Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced an increase in the minimum wage to N80,000. This decision, which is set to take effect immediately, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the standard of living for workers in the state.
During a press briefing at the government house in Yenagoa, Governor Diri highlighted that the new wage reflects the state’s dedication to fair labor practices and the need to combat rising living costs. He noted that this increase will provide much-needed financial relief to families and boost local economic activities.
“The welfare of our workers is paramount,” Governor Diri stated. “We understand the challenges that many face in meeting daily needs, and this new minimum wage is a step towards ensuring that our workforce can support themselves and their families adequately.”
The governor’s announcement has been met with widespread approval from labor unions and civil society organizations, who view it as a long-overdue acknowledgment of workers’ contributions to the state’s development. The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expressed gratitude for the government’s decision, calling it a historic milestone that sets a precedent for other states to follow.
In his address, Governor Diri also urged employers in the private sector to adopt similar wage structures, emphasizing the importance of equitable pay across all sectors. “We must work together to create an environment where every worker is valued and compensated fairly,” he said.
This increase positions Bayelsa State as one of the states leading the way in workers’ rights and welfare in Nigeria, aligning with broader national discussions about fair wages and economic sustainability.
