Remembering a Titan: Nigerian Exchange Group Mourns the Passing of Pa Akintola Williams, a Founding Father and Visionary Leader

Nigerian Exchange Group Plc and its subsidiary companies have expressed  deep sadness at the loss of one of its founding fathers, Pa Akintola Williams, CFR, CBE, FCA, who peacefully passed away on Monday at the remarkable age of 104.

Pa Akintola Williams holds a revered place in the annals of Nigeria’s financial history, having played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), which later transformed into the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc following its demutualization in 2021.

As a distinguished member of the National Council of the Exchange, his contributions were instrumental in propelling the growth of the Exchange’s listing portfolio. His legacy includes the institution of regulations that significantly reduced barriers for companies seeking listing on The Exchange, promoting inclusivity and economic growth.

In response to the news of his passing, Mr. Oscar N. Onyema, OON, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NGX Group, expressed deep sorrow, saying, “This is a profound loss for the Nigerian capital market and the entire nation. Nigeria bids farewell to one of its most distinguished professionals and forward-thinking corporate leaders. Pa Akintola Williams’ memory will forever be etched in the history of the Nigerian capital market as one of its great luminaries. His contributions to the capital market and the organized private sector will serve as enduring references, and we deeply appreciate his invaluable contributions.”

Mr. Onyema continued, “He epitomized a strong ethical culture and unwavering commitment to upholding top-notch professionalism. The recent collaboration between NGX Regulations, a subsidiary of the NGX Group, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) stands as a testament to the sturdy foundation that Pa Akintola laid in the accounting industry. His visionary leadership, commitment to excellence, and enduring legacy will be cherished and upheld by all of us who had the privilege of witnessing his remarkable achievements.”

Pa Akintola Williams was not only a founding father but also the last surviving signatory to the original Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, dating back to the historic founding of the NSE on September 15, 1960.

As Nigeria mourns the loss of this iconic figure, the legacy of Pa Akintola Williams will continue to resonate throughout the Nigerian financial and business sectors, serving as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
