Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, has dismissed speculation that he intends to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.

The Labour Party governor made the clarification during a monthly media chat on Friday, addressing growing rumours circulating in political circles.

Otti’s remarks followed a statement by Ginger Onwusibe, the lawmaker representing Isialangwa North and South in the National Assembly, who had previously indicated that Otti would not challenge Tinubu’s second-term aspirations.

The governor criticised individuals claiming to be in the opposition, accusing them of creating unnecessary tension and spreading unfounded narratives.

Otti’s emergence as Abia State governor in the 2023 elections marked a major political shift, ending the 24-year dominance of the People’s Democratic Party in the state. Running on the platform of the Labour Party, his victory was upheld by the courts following legal challenges.

He also used the opportunity to dispel ongoing rumours about potential defections, reaffirming his commitment to the Labour Party.
