Ethiopian Airlines, the largest airline in Africa, has signed lease agreements with AerCap Holdings N.V. for two converted freighter aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ERSF.
The aircraft, popularly known as “The Big Twin,” will become the first of its type to operate in Africa. Deliveries are expected in the second quarter of 2028 as the airline continues to expand its cargo capacity and strengthen its global logistics network.
According to the airline, the addition of the new freighters will significantly improve cargo efficiency and support increasing demand for air freight across international markets.
Commenting on the agreement, Mesfin Tasew said the partnership represents a strategic move to reinforce the airline’s position in the global cargo sector.
“We are delighted to partner with AerCap to bring the first Boeing 777-300ERSF to Africa. These aircraft will significantly enhance our cargo capacity and efficiency, boosting trade in the region,” Tasew said.
He noted that the airline remains committed to investing in modern and sustainable aviation solutions as global demand for cargo transport continues to rise.
“As demand for air freight continues to grow, Ethiopian Airlines remains committed to investing in modern, sustainable solutions that cement our position in the global cargo market,” he added.
On his part, Aengus Kelly said the transaction strengthens the long-standing relationship between both organisations while introducing a new aircraft type to the African aviation market.
“We are delighted to deepen our long-standing partnership with Ethiopian Airlines – the first customer to operate this aircraft type in Africa – through this important transaction,” Kelly said.
He explained that the Boeing 777-300ERSF freighter offers about 25 percent more capacity than smaller twin-engine long-haul freighters currently in operation, providing improved cost efficiencies and operational advantages.
“With 25% more capacity than today’s smaller twin-engine long-haul freighters, the 777-300ERSF delivers significant cost efficiencies and will position Ethiopian Airlines to further expand its growing cargo platform. We are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines and wish them continued success as they scale and strengthen their operations,” he added.
The deal is expected to further strengthen Ethiopian Airlines’ cargo platform and enhance trade connectivity across Africa and global markets as the airline continues expanding its fleet and logistics capabilities.
