Vice Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. John Okhuoya, in a statement to the media shared the university’s strategic direction emphasizing the importance of faith-based education, institutional integrity, and a deep commitment to the personal growth of every student.

He explained that at the heart of this vision is the desire to honor the legacy of the institution’s founder, the late Archbishop Benson A. Idahosa whose faith and pioneering spirit have been a defining influence on the university’s direction since its inception.

Prof. Okhuoya emphasized that BIU will remain firmly rooted in the Christian principles exemplified by the late Archbishop, with a focus on building a community that embodies boldness and excellence.

“Our heritage mandates a spirit of boldness and excellence,” Prof. Okhuoya said, quoting the scripture: “Do you see a man diligent and skillful in his business? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men” (Proverbs 22:29).

He reiterated that BIU aims to cultivate leaders who will stand out in their fields, making impactful contributions to society.

The Vice Chancellor also emphasized the university’s commitment to creating an institutional culture grounded in Christian values.

“Our goal is to ensure that BIU has an institutionalized character rooted in Christian principles and practice,” he added, referencing Colossians 1:10: “Walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work.”

Part of this transformative vision according to him includes the establishment of structures, systems, and processes that enable BIU to meet the highest standards of excellence.

Prof. Okhuoya acknowledged the importance of collaboration, drawing on the biblical wisdom of Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

‘‘With this in mind, BIU plans to foster a supportive and cohesive academic environment that encourages collaboration, innovation, and mutual growth. ”

He underscored the essence of an atmosphere that inspires spiritual growth while supporting optimal academic achievement referencing 1st Corinthians 14:40, “Let all things be done decently in an orderly manner,” as a guiding principle in ensuring BIU remains a place where students can thrive in all areas of life.

“As we look to the future, we understand that the success of this institution is measured by the achievements of our students,” Prof. Okhuoya explained. “If they fail, we fail.

“Our graduates will be grounded spiritually, mentally, and socially, fully prepared to lead with integrity and vision in a new world.”

Quoting Proverbs 22:6, he further emphasized the importance of laying a strong foundation for students:

“Train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not depart from it.” This guiding principle in his words ‘highlights BIU’s commitment to not only academic excellence but also the development of character and leadership in its students’.

With its renewed vision, BIU is poised to continue its legacy as a beacon of hope, faith, and excellence in higher education as Benson Idahosa University aims to fulfill its mission of producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also spiritually and socially equipped to drive positive change in their communities and beyond.
