The University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) has approved the expulsion of 28 students and revoked the certificates of 15 former students over various disciplinary offences.

The decision was taken at the institution’s 191st Regular Meeting of Senate held on Thursday, January 28, 2026. The Senate considered the report and recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC) before reaching its verdict.

Offences Committed by the Students

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the affected students were found guilty of serious misconduct.

The offences include assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, drug possession and use, falsification of admission results, and repeated failure to appear before the disciplinary committee.

The university also withdrew the certificates of 15 former students who ignored several invitations from the disciplinary panel.

Some Students Cleared, Others Warned

While 28 students were expelled, nine students were exonerated after investigations cleared them of wrongdoing.

In addition, 33 students received warnings for various infractions. These offences included conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.

The university described the disciplinary process as thorough and fair.

Vice-Chancellor Speaks on Academic Integrity

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining discipline.

He stated that the university would continue to enforce its rules without compromise. According to him, academic integrity remains a top priority.

“The academic integrity of the University is sacrosanct, and we are determined that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned. Our goal is not only to enforce discipline but also to guide our students towards responsible citizenship and academic excellence,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor also commended the Student Disciplinary Committee for its diligent handling of the cases.

He added that the university would strengthen student engagement, counselling, and orientation programmes. These efforts, he said, are aimed at promoting responsible conduct and preventing future disciplinary infractions.

The latest action by UNIABUJA underscores its resolve to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
