President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
“In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of AIG Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect,” said presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Tuesday evening.
The statement noted that in line with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu for the substantive IGP role before transmitting his name to the Senate for confirmation.
Prior to this appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to AIG last year and previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and in the Federal Capital Territory under Egbetokun.
Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and a former head of the Intelligence Response Team, a position once held by Abba Kyari.
His appointment formally ends Egbetokun’s tenure, which began in 2023.
