Peter Obi’s Key Ally, Oseloka Obaze, Resigns from Labour Party Over Anambra Primaries

Former UN diplomat and ex-Anambra SSG cites fraud, irregularities, and national leadership crisis in scathing resignation.

Oseloka Obaze, a prominent political figure and key supporter of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, has resigned his membership from the party.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of LP Ochuche Ward 406 in Ogbaru Local Government, Awka, on Sunday, Obaze declared his resignation, citing deep dissatisfaction with the party’s recent conduct, particularly the governorship primaries held in Anambra State on April 5, 2025.

Obaze, a former United Nations diplomat and ex-Secretary to the Anambra State Government under Peter Obi, had been a vocal and strategic member of the LP, especially during the 2023 general elections. He played a key role as Obi’s campaign manager and was instrumental in mobilizing support through the Obedient Movement.

Explaining his decision, Obaze described the primary election process as riddled with “irregularities, fraud, and criminality.” He noted that the event contradicted the party’s constitution and its stated democratic principles.

“The processes, conduct and outcome of the Labour Party governorship primaries held on April 5, 2025, in Awka, were fraught with outright irregularities, bothering on fraud and criminality. It was not in tandem with either the party’s Constitution and espoused core values or true tenets of democracy,” the statement read.

Obaze further pointed to unresolved leadership tensions at the national level, referencing the ongoing crisis between the Julius Abure and Sen. Nenadi Usman factions.

While he did not disclose his next political move, his departure marks a significant development for the Labour Party, which has been grappling with internal strife and post-election challenges.

Obaze previously resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022 to join the LP alongside Obi, reinforcing the party’s national momentum ahead of the 2023 polls.
