Oando Plc, the indigenous oil and gas company that recently acquired Nigeria Agip Oil Company, has confirmed four operational oil spills from October 2024 to date. The company announced the successful completion of repair works on affected pipelines in Bayelsa State.
This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday by Mrs Alero Balogun, General Manager, Human Resources & Business Support, Oando Group. The announcement follows the May 3 oil spill incident at Oando’s Ogboinbiri flow station in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, which channels crude to the company’s export terminal in Brass, Bayelsa.
“Between October 2024 to date, four operational spills occurred. Upon identification of each incident, we swiftly activated emergency response protocols in line with company policy,” Balogun stated. This included the immediate shut-in of affected wells, deployment of containment materials, and recovery operations.
Balogun noted that Joint Investigation Visits (JIVs) were conducted with relevant government agencies and representatives of the Ogboinbiri community to assess the impact and ensure transparency. She confirmed that repair works on the damaged pipeline sections have been completed, with a sectional replacement strategy underway to prevent future incidents.
“Oando remains fully committed to its host communities and is working diligently to ensure that its operations support the long-term environmental sustainability of the region,” Balogun affirmed.
The recent incidents highlight the ongoing environmental challenges in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions, where pipeline integrity and community relations remain critical.
