Nigeria’s Under 18 Women’s Handball team are presently undergoing thorough preparatory camping in Lagos ahead of the 2025 African Women’s Youth Handball Championship which is to be held in September.

The continental showdown which will also serve as qualifiers for the 2026 Women’s Youth World Handball Championship and as well as the IHF Women’s Intercontinental Phase, will be held in Oran, Algeria from the 14th to 21st September 2025.

To this end 19 players were invited to an intensive training camp at the Rowe Park Sports Center, Yaba, Lagos, to begin preparation ahead of the competition under the tutelage of Coach John and his assistant, Coach Bukola Duru.

Several of the players were part of the team that won the IHF Women’s Trophy Zonal Phase For Africa Zone 3 in Ivory Coast earlier in the year and they are gunning to make history again. Left back Omole Shola has been called up just as Soof Handball Club duo Ngozi Korie and Taiwo Islamiyat.

Others that will be fighting for a shirt in the team are Oluwalade Phebe of Ekiti Queens, Rima Queens’s Center back Esther Peter, Duru Success of Edo Dynamos and Audu Salamatu of FUNAD Academy to mention a few.

Coach John and Coach Bukola have a herculean task of matching the team’s exploits at the 2023 African Women’s Youth Handball Championship which was held in Monastir, Tunisia wherein Nigeria came third after defeating three times champion Angola 28-24 in the third place match. They also qualified for the world championship for the first time in their history.

They also have to qualify for the IHF Women’s Trophy Intercontinental Phase as the competition also serves as continental phase of the IHF Trophy.
