Nigerian Live Band Star, Akiin Shuga, Dies at 50

The founder of Shuga Band, celebrated for his dynamic stage performances and musical excellence, passes away in Canada.

Popular Nigerian live music performer and band leader, Akinloye Tofowomo, widely known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50.

His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday, noting that the Shuga Band founder died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.

The statement described Akiin Shuga as “a revered music icon and custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance.”

The family further appealed for privacy and quiet reflection during what they described as a deeply difficult time, adding that details of his funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Akiin Shuga, who became a household name in Nigeria’s live music circuit, was known for his energetic performances, philanthropic works, and his ability to bridge traditional and contemporary sounds through his band.

He is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
