The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over the emergence of fake social media accounts operated by unscrupulous individuals claiming to represent or be associated with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
The warning was issued in a statement on Friday by the Army’s spokesperson, Colonel Apollonia Anele, who clarified that the COAS does not maintain any official social media account on any platform.
Colonel Anele cautioned members of the public to exercise “extreme caution and remain vigilant” to avoid falling victim to scammers using such fake accounts to defraud unsuspecting individuals, solicit funds, or spread misinformation in the name of the Chief of Army Staff or the Nigerian Army.
She further advised the public not to engage with, respond to, or share information from any account purporting to speak on behalf of the COAS.
“The Nigerian Army is taking all the necessary steps to apprehend the operators of these fake accounts with a view to bringing them to justice in accordance with the extant laws,” Anele stated.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the public from fraud and misinformation, urging Nigerians to rely only on verified and official communication channels for information related to the military.
