Newcastle United have reached an agreement to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa in a deal worth up to £55 million.
The transfer package includes an initial £50m fee plus £5m in performance-related add-ons. The DR Congo international is now on his way to Tyneside to complete the formalities ahead of the transfer deadline, according to BBC Sport.
The move comes just 24 hours after Wissa publicly called on Brentford to “keep their word” and allow him to leave, following weeks of stalled negotiations. Newcastle had previously seen two bids rejected before finally striking a breakthrough.
Wissa’s signing arrives in the same window that saw Alexander Isak depart Newcastle for Liverpool in a British record £125m move, while the Magpies also completed the £60m capture of striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart on a six-year deal.
In a statement on Instagram, Wissa said:
“I have stayed silent for much of the summer, but with just hours remaining of the transfer window, I feel compelled to make it clear that I want to leave Brentford. I believe the club are unduly standing in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer.”
Brentford, meanwhile, have endured a busy summer of departures, losing Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United for £65m, goalkeeper Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen for £8m, and midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal for £15m. They offset some of the exits by signing forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth in a club-record £42.5m deal.
Elsewhere, Newcastle target Jorgen Strand Larsen is expected to remain at Wolves, despite strong interest. Wolves rejected bids of £50m and £55m, holding firm as they look to secure their own reinforcements, including a £24m move for Genk striker Tolu Arokodare.
