The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Monday convened a high-level meeting with key aviation unions to resolve concerns surrounding the concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

The meeting brought together leaders of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN), the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP). Discussions focused on workers’ welfare, job security, and the long-term sustainability of the airport under the proposed concession arrangement.

After extensive deliberations, the parties reached a mutually beneficial agreement. As part of the resolution, the unions and the concessionaire signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) guaranteeing job security and preserving the employment status of all staff affected by the concession process.

The agreement stipulates that no worker will be unjustly displaced and that existing conditions of service will be maintained in line with agreed terms.

Keyamo commended the union leaders for what he described as their maturity and commitment to constructive dialogue. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to modernize aviation infrastructure while protecting workers’ rights.

“This administration believes strongly in dialogue, fairness, and inclusivity. Infrastructure development and workers’ welfare are not mutually exclusive,” the minister said.

The resolution marks a significant step in the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s aviation sector, signaling a balance between private sector participation and the protection of public sector employees.

The ministry pledged continued engagement with stakeholders as it works to build a competitive and sustainable aviation industry.
