Kenyan authorities are seeking transaction advisers to structure and develop a large gas-fired power project in Mombasa, as electricity demand continues to rise across the country.

The planned 1,200-megawatt (1.2 GW) facility, expected to require a total investment of $2.9 billion, will be developed by state-owned electricity producer KenGen in partnership with private investors. The plant will operate on imported liquefied natural gas and is intended to strengthen supply, complementing existing generation capacity.

Kenya’s electricity demand has surged in recent years, with state distributor Kenya Power and Lighting Company reporting a record peak of 2,439.06 MW on December 4, 2025, surpassing the previous high of 2,418.77 MW recorded in November 2025. The African Development Bank notes that peak demand has increased nearly 35% since 2018 due to household connections, industrial growth, urbanization, and residential energy consumption.

Kenya’s installed electricity capacity reached 3,840.8 MW as of June 2025, with geothermal energy accounting for 25.9%, hydropower 24%, thermal plants 17.2%, solar photovoltaic 14.1%, and wind power 12%. The government targets 15,000 MW of installed capacity by 2030.

Alongside generation expansion, Kenya is improving transmission infrastructure to reduce power outages. In December 2025, a $311 million public-private partnership was signed to develop two high-voltage transmission lines. One line will evacuate about 300 MW of geothermal power from Baringo-Silali, while the second will extend the high-voltage network to western Kenya, addressing voltage drops and technical losses.

Earlier in February, Kenya Power and Lighting Company launched a 1 billion Kenyan shilling ($7.7 million) program to modernize and expand electricity infrastructure in western Kenya, targeting 11 counties including Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Kakamega.

The Mombasa gas-fired power project represents a critical step in Kenya’s efforts to meet rising electricity demand and support economic growth through reliable, modern energy infrastructure.
