A fire broke out on a ferry carrying 19 passengers at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Thursday morning, resulting in four passengers sustaining varying degrees of injuries. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 am, as the ferry, “Igbega Eko,” was en route to Victoria Island.

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Public Affairs Unit, it was confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“The incident involved the LAGFERRY vessel, which had 19 passengers on board. Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team, in close coordination with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders, mobilized immediately to the scene,” the statement said.

Thankfully, all passengers and crew were successfully evacuated from the ferry, though four passengers sustained minor injuries. They are currently receiving medical attention. LASWA assured the public that safety protocols were followed and that ferry operations are continuing as scheduled.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, with LASWA collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to conduct a thorough assessment.

The authority reiterated its commitment to prioritizing safety and strengthening fire prevention measures across the Lagos waterways.

“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways,” LASWA stated. “We encourage all passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while using our ferries. Further updates will be provided as investigations progress.”
