London police on Monday arrested former UK ambassador Peter Mandelson in connection with allegations related to disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein. The arrest comes just days after ex-prince Andrew was detained in a separate probe tied to the latest Epstein-linked documents.
Mandelson, 72, a prominent figure in British politics and the UK’s former envoy to Washington, was taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office following revelations from documents released by the US government last month.
“Officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
UK television footage showed Mandelson being driven from his north London home accompanied by a man and a woman, following earlier police raids on his properties. “He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday, 23 February and has been taken to a London police station for interview,” the Met added.
The investigation centers on allegations that Mandelson sent sensitive documents to Epstein while serving as a government minister, including during the 2008 financial crisis. Police have not specified which documents are under scrutiny.
Mandelson was sacked by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as envoy to Washington in September after earlier releases of Epstein-linked documents revealed the extent of their relationship. The appointment had sparked political turmoil, prompting the resignation of two of Starmer’s top aides.
Starmer later apologized to Epstein’s victims and accused Mandelson of lying about the nature of his ties to Epstein during the vetting process for his Washington posting.
