Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for a strengthened national resolve to end the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) by the year 2030.
In a statement shared on her official X handle on Monday to commemorate World AIDS Day 2025, themed “Overcoming Disruptions; Transforming the AIDS Response,” Mrs Tinubu said the annual observance serves as a reminder of the need to “revamp efforts” toward ending the epidemic.
She acknowledged the progress made across HIV prevention, treatment, and care, noting that Nigeria has recorded significant improvements over the years.
“Over the years, Nigeria has made remarkable progress in HIV prevention, treatment, and care, but our journey towards an AIDS-free nation continues,” she stated. “Every Nigerian deserves access to life-saving services, free from stigma and discrimination.”
The First Lady especially urged young people to take responsibility for their health by knowing their HIV status and seeking treatment promptly if they test positive.
“To our youth, take charge of your health, know your HIV status by getting tested, and seek treatment if found positive,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu also called on communities nationwide to show compassion and support for people living with HIV while rejecting all forms of discrimination.
“To our communities, I call on you to show compassion and support and say no to stigmatisation.”
World AIDS Day, observed every December 1, is dedicated to raising awareness on HIV/AIDS, supporting individuals living with the virus, and honouring those who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses.
