Federal Government Orders Comprehensive Audit of Nigerian Airlines Amidst Safety Concerns

Amid growing safety concerns in Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Federal Government has announced plans for a comprehensive audit of all local airlines in the country. The directive, delivered by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, aims to ensure the safety of passengers and the health of the civil aviation industry.

Keyamo made the announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, where he emphasized the importance of guaranteeing the safety and reliability of domestic air travel. He highlighted the recent suspension of Dana Airlines and revealed that all other carriers in Nigeria would undergo thorough audits as part of ongoing efforts to uphold industry standards.

The decision to audit local airlines comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny following safety incidents involving Dana Airlines, including a recent runway skid at Lagos airport. Keyamo’s directive to suspend Dana Airlines drew criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised about potential interference in the autonomy of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Responding to criticism, Keyamo defended his actions, asserting his authority to intervene in matters of national security. He emphasized the need to prioritize passenger safety and condemned any attempts to compromise aviation regulations for personal gain.

The minister’s remarks also addressed broader issues of corruption within regulatory bodies, vowing to dismantle systems that endanger the lives of Nigerians. Keyamo called for accountability and transparency within the aviation sector, challenging stakeholders to prioritize public safety over personal interests.

Regarding the timeline for the audit of Dana Airlines and other carriers, Keyamo emphasized the importance of expediency while ensuring thoroughness. He underscored the government’s commitment to restoring confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry and reiterated the imperative of adhering to regulatory standards.

As the audit process unfolds, stakeholders in Nigeria’s aviation sector are closely watching developments, hopeful that robust oversight measures will enhance safety and restore public trust in domestic air travel. With passenger safety at the forefront, the Federal Government’s initiative signals a proactive approach to addressing critical challenges within the aviation industry.
